One of our last projects of the term was to look at Still-life painting from different time periods and countries, One of our last projects of the term was to look at Still-life painting from different time periods and countries, accompanied by studies of fruit and still life sketches in watercolor pencil. This genre is a staple in art history and can be traced to many cultures and regions. Still-life painting as an independent genre first flourished in the Netherlands during the early 1600s, reflecting the increasing affluence of society. The Dutch and Flemish Golden Age carried on the allegorical tradition, which was the most prolific time for the genre, reflecting the influence of trade with the far east and Europe. The opulent table settings of the elite also showcased the cultural advancements in botanical and scientific discoveries in the depiction of prize tulip specimens. Still-life painting continued to evolve in a more casual way, into the first half of the 20th century with many artists like Matisse, Cezanne and Van Gogh carrying on the tradition. The studies and exercises were a prelude to a final painting project, which is our gift to you. Have a nice holiday ! I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.
